WASHINGTON, DC – The Arizona Pharmacy Association (AzPA) has selected Alan D. Barreuther, PharmD, FASHP, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Barreuther was presented the award at the 2017 Annual Convention Awards Luncheon on Sunday, June 11. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Barreuther has contributed to his community since graduating from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in 1975. He became interested in the aspects of disease prevention and the impact of smoking on asthma and COPD patients after seeing the limits of pharmacological therapies in pulmonary patients. He joined the American Lung Association (Arizona Lung Association) as a volunteer in 1978 to become involved with patient and professional educational programs in asthma, COPD, and smoking prevention and cessation. He served on various advisory boards at the state level and as President of the American Lung Association of Arizona in 1992. He was actively involved with smoking issues in the state and in Tucson, which culminated with the voter-approved state initiative to eliminate smoking in public places and restaurants in 2006. Barreuther is retired from pharmacy practice and continues to serve on the ALA Advisory Board.
Barreuther’s state pharmacy association activities included membership in the Arizona Pharmacy Association; Southern Arizona Society of Hospital Pharmacists, serving as past president and on the Board of Directors; and the Arizona State Council of Hospital Pharmacists. His industry pharmacy organization memberships included the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, American Association of Poison Control Centers, and as a clinical liaison for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state, and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
