WASHINGTON, DC – The Minnesota Pharmacists Association (MPhA) has selected Denise M. Frank, RPh, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Frank was presented the award at the 2017 Annual Learning Networking Event on Thursday, September 7. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Frank has contributed to her community since graduating from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 1985. Her current industry and pharmacy relationships include MPhA, APhA, ASHP, the American Society for Pharmacy Law, and the Technician Educators Council. She participated in the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as District V Audit Committee chair and member of the Nominations Committee and Task Force on Development of Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam, and served as member of the PMJE review Committee until August 2013 when she was hired by NABP as Accreditation and Inspection Services Manager.

Frank has contributed to her community and pharmacy both in Minnesota and nationally. She has served as the University of Minnesota Century Mortar Club preceptor and mentor for pharmacy students and is a life member of the U of M Pharmacy Alumni Society and has worked with the American Cancer Society South Chapter, the Milaca Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. Frank received the Diabetes Awareness Program Dream Catcher Award, the Helen Keller Sight Award, and served as a Lions Hearing Research Fellow. She is a Trustee of Zion Lutheran Church and has served as Chair of the Church Directory project and Financial Secretary.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
