WASHINGTON, DC – The North Dakota Pharmacists Association (NDPhA) has selected Timothy L. Weippert, RPh, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Weippert was presented the award at the 2017 President's Banquet on Saturday, April 22. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Weippert has contributed to his community since graduating from the North Dakota State University in 1978 and holds many leadership positions throughout the community. He currently services as Chief Operating Officer at Thrifty White Pharmacy, and has been highly involved with community pharmacy at a local, regional and national level. Weippert has presented at regional and national events for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, National Community Pharmacists Association, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, and National Council of Prescription Drug Programs. He currently holds registered pharmacist licenses in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota.

In his role as COO at Thrifty White Pharmacy, Weippert assists the president in planning long-range growth strategies and formulating major objectives and operating policies. He also oversees and directs operations of retail, closed door, central fill pharmacies, warehouse drug distribution, the affiliated pharmacy program, clinical services program, Long Term Care Program, and Specialty Pharmacy program. He spends countless hours working with his team to represent the company interests in the industry by serving on boards and participating in multiple work groups while serving on the Thrifty Drug Stores Board of Directors and as a Trustee of Thrifty Drug Stores, Inc., Profit Sharing Plan.

Weippert proves the profession does not stop when the door closes. He continues to work through the hard challenges, and directs his team to be innovative in their processes, which allowed them to receive the Drug Store News 2016 Innovator of the Year Award.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state, and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
