WASHINGTON, DC – The Colegio de Farmaceuticos de Puerto Rico (CFPR) has selected Marisa Carrasquillo as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Carrasquillo was presented the award at the Award Ceremony on Friday, August 18. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Carrasquillo has contributed to her community since graduating from the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Pharmacy in 1991. She is an independent community pharmacy owner in Guayama, providing dedicated service to her patients and community. One of her main approaches is to promote health through sport. She has sponsored the "Yankees de la Pachanga" 6 year champions and "Los Marineros" baseball teams and the "Patillas Volley Nativas" volleyball team. She is the founder of the project "Salud Jomari", a group designed to promote physical activity, as well as the Jomari Running Team that encourages the townspeople to run.

Carrasquillo’s state pharmacy affiliations include the Asociación de Dueños de Farmacia de PR, NCPA, and Coopharma. She is an active member of the Colegio de Farmaceutico de Puerto Rico. Carrasquillo received the "Masónica" Race dedication for being a sport propeller in 2015, and she was selected as honorary member of the Golden Key International Honor Society Organization’s University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras chapter in 2016. She is a member of the school board of the Maria Davila Semidey bilingual school.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
