WASHINGTON, DC – The Arkansas Pharmacists Association (APA) has selected Sue Frank, PharmD, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Frank was presented the award at the 2017 Luncheon & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 8. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim. Frank has contributed to her community since graduating from the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in 1974.

Frank began her lifelong dedication to community service by signing up to be a candy striper as a teenager at the Deshea County hospital. Her time at the hospital also introduced her to the healthcare field, something she later decided to pursue as a career. Frank completed her pre-pharmacy work at ASU in Jonesboro and graduated from UAMS College of Pharmacy. She worked as a retail pharmacist, a staff pharmacist at the Arkansas Department of Health, and for Merck as an Executive District Manager. In 2008, after 28 years working for Merck, she retired and set her sights on helping her community.

Frank provided volunteer services for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, St. James United Methodist Church, and UAMS College of Pharmacy Alumni Association and received several Volunteer of the Year awards for her dedication to these organizations. Allison serves on multiple committees, councils, and boards for UAMS, St. James United Methodist Church, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and is the only woman to serve on the Merchants and Farmers Bank Board of Directors in the bank’s 108-year history.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state, and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service. The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards.

The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
