WASHINGTON, DC – The Wyoming Pharmacy Association (WPhA) has selected Joseph F. Steiner, PharmD, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Steiner was presented the award at the WPhA/WSHP 100th Annual Convention on Saturday, June 24. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Steiner has contributed to his community since graduating from the University of Michigan in 1974. He is a career-long member of the WPhA and WSHP and throughout his career, has been a leader in Wyoming pharmacy, helping to advance practice in the state. He has served as Director of Clinical Pharmacy in Family Practice, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, and Director of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Wyoming - School of Pharmacy and Project Director of the Wyoming AIDS Education program, and was key in establishing the Doctor of Pharmacy Program at the University of Wyoming. Steiner also served as the Dean of the Idaho State Pharmacy School before returning to Wyoming to serve as the Dean of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming.

Steiner’s pharmacy organization involvement includes the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leaders Fellowship Program. His civic affiliations include Rotary International, Lion's Club, and the Ivinson Memorial Hospital Foundation. Steiner is solution focused, innovative, and always willing to set aside his own interests to help others. His commitment to and passion for pharmacy and health care cultivates knowledge, values, and motivation with those he encounters.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
