WASHINGTON, DC – The Kentucky Pharmacists Association (KPhA) has selected William P. Mattingly, as the recipient of the 2018 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Mattingly was presented the award at the KPhA Annual Meeting & Convention on Sunday, June 17, 2018. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Mattingly has contributed to his community since graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1973. After graduating, Mattingly returned to his hometown of Lebanon, KY and immediately became involved in church and community service. He is the independent community pharmacy owner of Pat’s Pharmacy and he is passionate about the profession and loves his community.
Mattingly is a very humble man and does not volunteer for reward or recognition. He helps those in need, and continues to be there for them, making a noticeable impact on their lives. He exemplifies the type of volunteer work that is most reflective in the Oath of a Pharmacist—“I will consider the welfare of humanity and relief of suffering my primary concerns”.
Mattingly began his present service on the Springview Hospital Board of Directors in 2002. He served as president of the KPhA in 2006 and on multiple occasions, has served as a guest on Career Day and speaker on Health Services Day in local schools.
Mattingly joined the Citizen’s Bank Board of Directors in 2010. He worked several years on the Marion County Junior Miss Committee and served as program chair. He now serves as president of Junior Miss, Inc. which governs the local Distinguished Young Woman Program.
Mattingly has served as umpire for the local Little League Baseball, past President of the local Kiwanis Club, a graduate of Leadership Lebanon- Marion County and served as Medicine Day Chairperson in 1990. He is past President, and current member of Lebanon Country Club, a member of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, and in 1990, he was voted Outstanding Chamber Member. In 1995 he was voted Outstanding Business Person. He has also served as a board member on the Chamber of Commerce. He has volunteered countless hours over the years at the Marion Co. Country Ham Days, a premier Kentucky Festival event.
Mattingly is a faithful steward of his parish, St. Augustine Church, where he has been a choir member for 40 years and has served on the parish council and performs charity work through the church.
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
