WASHINGTON, DC – The Tennessee Pharmacists Association (TPA) has selected Timothy L. Tucker, PharmD, FAPhA, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Tucker was presented the award at the 2017 Tennessee Pharmacists Association Summer Meeting on Friday, July 7. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Tucker has contributed to his community since graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1988. He is an independent pharmacy owner of City Drug Company and currently serves as University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy part-time faculty member, member of the Admissions Committee, and member of the Dean’s Advisory Council Alumni Association. Tucker has sustained a record of community service that contributed to the progress of the community where he grew up and where he has practiced for over 28 years. Tucker not only served his community through his pharmacy and patient outreach, but also through serving his state and national pharmacy organizations, mentoring student pharmacists, serving his church, and being an outstanding business man in his community. Tucker’s practice has focused on bringing personalized pharmacist care services to all patients. He has worked to develop and support high patient care standards and supported his staff in obtaining advanced training to enable them to better serve the pharmacy's patients. Tucker was one of the first, if not the very first, pharmacists to be recognized by Medicare as a pharmacist immunizer.
Tucker has served as TPA Treasurer, President, Society of Independent Pharmacists Chair, and Speaker of the House. In addition, Tucker has served on the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy and as Speaker of the House, member of the Board of Trustees, President-Elect, President, and Past President of the American Pharmacists Association. He is the 2017 President of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and is a member of Phi Lambda Sigma. His awards include the University of Tennessee Academy of Student Pharmacists "Friend of ASP" Award, 2004; the Phi Lambda Sigma National Leadership Award, 1997; the Albert B Prescott/Glaxo Welcome Phi Delta Chi National Leadership Award, 1996; and the Marion Merrell Dow Distinguished Young Pharmacist, 1993.
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
