Philip R. Hagerman of Fenton will receive the coveted Bowl of Hygeia Award during the 2018 Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) Annual Convention & Exposition, held Feb. 23-25 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

The Bowl of Hygeia Award, presented in cooperation with the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, is given to a pharmacist who has made outstanding professional contributions and has participated in community or governmental activities that reflect well on the pharmacy profession.

Undoubtedly, Hagerman has devoted his career and life to advancing the opportunities for pharmacists to provide the best patient care possible. After graduating from Ferris State University in 1975, Hagerman went on to join his father, the late Dale Hagerman, in the pharmacy business. Since 1991, Hagerman has served as chair and chief executive officer of Diplomat, involving himself in all aspects of the business and operations. He recently announced his transition into Chairman Emeritus of Diplomat’s Board of Directors. His entrepreneurial skills, ability to foster key relationships in the pharmacy profession and an eye for marketing and strategic operations all contributed to Diplomat being named one of the top 100 job creators in the nation in 2012 from Inc. Magazine.

Hagerman has also continued to be involved with the profession through work in national, state and local associations and within his community. He has served on the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy Board of Directors, was president of the Genesee County Pharmacists Association and has participated on numerous committees with the Association over the years. His expertise in pharmacy has landed him several opportunities to speak at state and national conferences, as well as serving as a consultant for the United States Department of Justice and an expert witness on drug diversion cases. Hagerman is also committed to giving back to his home communities of Flint and Genesee County via the Hagerman Foundation, established in 2014. The Foundation works to support organizations dedicated to education, life skills, counseling and the arts in surrounding communities. Hagerman continues to be committed to revitalizing downtown Flint and creating sustainable jobs and futures for the Flint community.

Throughout his career, Hagerman has been recognized and presented with numerous awards for his work in the pharmacy profession including Michigan Pharmacists Association’s Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award in 1999 (now known as the Excellence in Innovation Award), the Blue Chip Award for Outstanding Business Practices from the United States Chamber of Commerce in 2000, the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Michigan/Northwest Ohio Region from Ernst & Young in 2010, Leader and Innovator of the Year from Grant Thornton in 2011 and Pharmacist of the Month from the Professional Compounding Centers of America.

Hagerman’s ongoing dedication to the profession over the last 40 years has provided the innovation and growth necessary to meet the continuous changes in healthcare and serve the diverse needs of patient populations.

Michigan Pharmacists Association, representing the nearly 9,000 pharmacists and 15,000 pharmacy technicians in Michigan, strives to serve members by providing support, advocacy and resources that ultimately improve patient care, safety, health and the practice of pharmacy.
