WASHINGTON, DC – The Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) has selected Thaddeus Schumacher, PharmD, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Schumacher was presented the award at the 2017 PSW Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 16. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Schumacher has contributed to his community since graduating from the Creighton University School of Pharmacy in 1996. He is the independent community pharmacy owner of Hometown Pharmacy in Fitchburg, as well as the current chair of the Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board. He has been a leader with creative and innovative ways to provide for underserved populations in the Fitchburg community. Combining his passion for pharmacy service and cycling, Schumacher delivers free medication to patients’ work or home by bicycle to ensure patients with limited access to transportation get their medication on time, while simultaneously inspiring his patients and community to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
Schumacher is an active Member of PSW, the Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board Chair, Arizona Pharmacists Alliance, National Association of Community Pharmacists, American Pharmacists Association, Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society, and the Tippecanoe County Pharmacists Association. He has also served as Preceptor, Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, Glendale (2002-2007); Treasurer, Tippecanoe County Pharmacists Association (2000-2001); Judge for Purdue University Patient Counseling Competition (1997-2000); and Guest Speaker for Health Care System class, Purdue University School of Pharmacy (2000).
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
