WASHINGTON, DC – The New Mexico Pharmacists Association (NMPhA) has selected David Lansford, RPh, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Lansford was presented the award at the NMPhA 2017 Annual Convention on Sunday, June 25. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Lansford has contributed to his community since graduating from the Southwestern Oklahoma State University School of Pharmacy in 1982. He is a current member of the New Mexico Pharmacists Association, and the independent pharmacy owner of Roden-Smith Pharmacy.

Lansford has devoted an incredible amount of energy, time, and passion to volunteer efforts that better the community locally and regionally. He believes a responsible and active member of any society will not only help to maintain their community, but will also work to grow and improve it. Lansford volunteered his time as a youth leader at their local church, as a youth basketball coach, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. His involvement in the Chamber spurred Lansford’s interest in local politics and he was elected District 1 Commissioner in Clovis. Lansford has served as the Mayor of Clovis for almost 20 years. He has advocated for new businesses and industries to come to the Clovis area, and was a part of the effort to keep Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis when it was put on the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure list. He has been the Chairman of the Ute Water Authority and a principal advocate for securing a sustainable water supply to Clovis and surrounding communities. His position as Mayor has taken him to Singapore as a representative of Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base, and to Washington, D.C., many times as an advocate for the interests of Clovis and Eastern New Mexico. Lansford is a great example of what it means to work hard, be compassionate when listening to patients concerns, and provide a trustworthy and quality service to his customers. He has provided and continues to provide this same level of care, compassion, and approach-ability in his civic service roles.

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
