Catalyst for Innovative Pharmacist-led Disease Management Program Wins Prestigious Miller Award 


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation today announced Daniel Garrett, BSPharm, MS, FASHP, is the recipient of the 2016 APhA Foundation Jacob W. Miller Award. The award recognizes individuals who have advanced the APhA Foundation’s mission through involvement in its programs, support of its initiatives or leadership in carrying out its mission. It was established in 2000 to honor Jacob Miller, who served as president of the APhA Foundation from 1991 to 2000. Garrett will be honored at the APhA2016 Annual Meeting and Exposition, March 4-7, 2016, in Baltimore. The official award presentation will take place on March 7 at the APhA Foundation Contributors’ Breakfast. 


“I am honored to receive the Jacob W. Miller award and am grateful to the selection committee and APhA Foundation Board for this recognition," said Garrett. “This award recognizes not just my work, but others who made the Asheville Project a reality as well as and APhA Foundation staff who were instrumental in replicating the model across the country. Now, pharmacists are more directly involved in helping people manage their chronic conditions and pharmacists are increasingly recognized as patient care providers.” 

Garrett was the driving force behind the Asheville Project in North Carolina where patients received help from pharmacists for their challenges with diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma and depression. Based on the Asheville Project, the APhA Foundation launched the Patient Self-Management Program and Diabetes Ten City Challenge to replicate it nationally. The model is now used by employers in over 40 states. 

Garrett is Chief Trailblazer of the Blue Ridge Mountain Group LLC, a consulting group that helps individuals, organizations and communities develop leadership and management systems. Previously, he was the Director of Pharmacy at Mission Hospital in Asheville, and Executive Director of the North Carolina Pharmacists Association. Garrett also served as Senior Director of Medication Adherence Programs at the APhA Foundation from 2001 to 2008.
