WASHINGTON, DC – The Wyoming Pharmacy Association (WPhA) has selected Jaime Hornecker, Pharm.D., as the recipient of the 2016 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Hornecker was presented the award at the 99th Annual WPhA/WSHP Convention on Saturday, June 25. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the American Pharmacists Association with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Hornecker is an outstanding educator for pharmacists today and for pharmacists of the future. She graduated from the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy with her Doctor of Pharmacy. She has provided local and national presentations to various health care providers with a majority including pharmacists. The impact on pharmacists through these presentations is substantial and demonstrates her excellence in the profession of pharmacy. Several of these highquality presentations have been provided at Wyoming pharmacy meetings and have consistently received excellent reviews.
Furthermore, Hornecker has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in prominent journals and textbooks. Her ability to collaborate and contribute meaningfully through her verbal and written communication definitely leaves a lasting mark on the profession now and in the future. She has trained numerous pharmacy residents (PGY1) by directing an ambulatory care focused program. These residents have become pharmacists that seek to advance the pharmacy profession. Hornecker has expanded this program from one resident to two in 2015 and from one core clinic to a multisite program including federally qualified health centers. This dedication and expansion is further evidence of her great ability to impact pharmacists of today.
Hornecker is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist, a certified diabetes educator and a licensed immunizer. She is constantly pushing herself to improve health care for the community of Casper and the state of Wyoming. The clinical services that she provides at the Casper Family Medicine Residency are recognized by students, resident physicians and her fellow faculty members at the clinic. She is helping advance patient care in Casper and providing opportunities for others to learn with her.
Hornecker’s dedication to pharmacy is clearly demonstrated through her activities in various professional associations. This list includes membership in the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), Wyoming Society of Health Systems Pharmacists, and Wyoming Pharmacists Association.
Her consistent, active participation in these organizations show her leadership, dedication, and impact in the pharmacy profession. She has been active in advancing pharmacy across the state of Wyoming and nationally.
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
