WASHINGTON, DC – The Massachusetts Pharmacists Association (MPhA) has selected Anita Young, EdD, RPh, as the recipient of the 2017 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Young was presented the award at the 2017 Annual Convention on Thursday, September 14. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and the American Pharmacists Association, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.

Young has contributed to her community since graduating from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and continues her academia pharmacy practice at Northeastern University. She is a member of her state pharmacy association and has dedicated 50 years of service to the pharmacy profession, taking on new challenges with enthusiasm and competence.

Young has a passion for the Pharmacy profession but more than the profession, she gives herself to causes which either support or elevate the profession to a higher level. Young has been looking to elevate pharmacists’ involvement in providing emergency contraception by getting involved with the first steering committee. She received the MassPro Award for Excellence for developing the Northeastern University Adult Immunization Training Program in 2009. When the tragedy of NECC hit, she determined what could be done to prevent another tragedy, and assembled compounding seminars throughout the Commonwealth.

Young is vehemently devoted to the Braintree Coalition for Drug Abuse, Addiction and Diversion Awareness. She continually performs outreach to destigmatize Addiction, especially among Pharmacists and other health care providers.

Young is currently affiliated with several industry and pharmacy organizations. She is the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy District 1 Secretary/Treasurer, and member of the Pharmacy Committee – Massachusetts Health Council. Throughout her career, Young’s affiliations include the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy/American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy District I & II Meeting Planning Committee, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Emergency Contraception – Steering Committee, EC Network – Boston, MA, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Continuing Pharmacy Education – Program Committee,

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take an active role in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent, and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.

The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
