WASHINGTON, DC – The Illinois Pharmacists Association (IPA) has selected Joyce E. Fogleman, R.Ph., as the recipient of the 2016 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. Fogleman was presented the award at the 2016 IPA Annual Convention & Expo on Saturday, October 1. The Bowl of Hygeia is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the American Pharmacists Association with support from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Fogelman, who owns J&S Professional Pharmacy Inc. in West Frankfort, has a long history of philanthropy and supporting her community. Several causes have benefited from her giving, including a high school music program, fire department, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where she received her pharmacy education. In addition, Fogelman donated 75% of the costs for an 11,000 square-foot and has purchased headstones for friends unable to afford them and has made trips abroad possible for many family members and friends.
Fogelman recently returned from a trip to four European countries with several employees who have worked for her more than 20 years, paying their way. She’s planning another trip for other workers. When she purchased the business in 1988, three people worked at the pharmacy. Today, there are 24. They have returned her kindness through their own with customers, often taking medicine outside to people waiting in what is often a long drive-thru line, or delivering prescriptions to people’s homes.
She has sworn off automated telephone lines and counting machines. “We need employees. West Frankfort needs employment here,” she said.
Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities. The award is presented annually by participating state pharmacist associations, including those in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to service through their local, state and national pharmacy associations, award recipients have devoted their time, talent and resources to a wide variety of causes and community service.
The Bowl of Hygeia is the most widely recognized international symbol for the pharmacy profession and is considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. The Bowl of Hygeia has been associated with the pharmacy profession since as early as 1796 when the symbol was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy. The bowl represents a medicinal potion and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why the pharmacy profession has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol.
