Shane Kraus
Family Practice Physician
Shane Kraus received his bachelor degree at Duke University in 1974 and Medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in 1978. Along with practicing medicine for almost 20 years, he serves as a member on several committees including: Regional Quality Council Committee and Quality Management Committee of Cigna Healthplans of Virginia; Executive Committee and Utilization Management Committee of HEALTHSOUTH Medical Center; Performance Based Reimbursement Advisory Committee, Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia; and Chairman of Managed Care Committee, Virginia Academy of Family Physicians and Chairman of the Department of Family Practice at HEALTHSOUTH Medical Center. Dr. Kraus has also published “How to Win an Argument with your HMO”, Family Practice Management, September, 1994; and “Measuring the Value of Primary Care”, Family Practice Management, June, 1997 and is a reviewer for Family Practice Management magazine. He also serves at the Medical College of Virginia as Assistant Professor, Clinical Medicine, Community Faculty and at Duke University, Mentorship Program for Pre-Medical Undergraduates.
Dr. Kraus was a Primary Care Network Development consultant at the Healthsouth Medical Center in 1994 where he has developed Healthsouth Family Practice and occupational Health Services as a cornerstone of Healthsouth’s fully integrated health care delivery system. He opened three new locations while recruiting and managing additional sites and physicians for the area. He negotiated agreements with managed care companies and non-physician health care providers while performing duties of Medical Review Officer, maintaining overall clinical responsibilities for the area carrying a full clinical load, and assuming medical directorship of Our Lady of Hope Nursing Facility. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors, Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.
