Effectiveness of Glycemic Control Education Delivered by a Community Pharmacy Resident
Teona Milunovic is a PGY1 community-based pharmacy resident at Walgreens/MCPHS in Boston, MA.
“Driven by patient interactions and the desire to make a difference for each patient, I always strive to be a strong advocate for patients.
As a highly prevalent and comorbid disease state, diabetes was estimated to affect around 12% of the US population in 2021.
Unfortunately, many patients often struggle with understanding glycemic targets, monitoring glucose levels, and appropriate ways of managing diabetes. Recognizing this problem, as some of the most accessible members of the healthcare team, community pharmacists are in a position to make impactful interventions through patient education and close follow-up. With this project I hope to highlight the impact that community pharmacists can have on optimizing patients’ diabetes management and glycemic control.
I am grateful and honored to have received the APhA Foundation Incentive Grant. I am excited to contribute to bridging the gap between primary care services and community pharmacies. I look forward to exploring clinical service opportunities within the community setting and offering accessible and affordable care to patients. Most of all I look forward to empowering patients to be involved in their healthcare and confidently in control of their diabetes management.”
