The Effects of Pharmacists’ Intervention and Education on SABA Overuse in Medicaid Patients

Mary Louise Andersen.png

Karissa May is a PGY1 specialty community-based resident at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy in Kansas City, MO.

“Short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) overuse is a preventable risk factor for hospitalizations and less favorable outcomes in patients living with asthma. Community pharmacists are accessible, trusted professionals that can use their position in healthcare to their advantage to better take care of these patients and prevent this overuse.

My motivation for this project was to provide patients with the education and help they need to understand that overusing their SABA inhalers will most likely lead to worse outcomes. I do not believe that much of our community in Kansas City recognizes this problem because many of our patients are using more than 3 rescue inhalers every 6 months. This project will also strengthen the community pharmacist's role in direct patient care

I am excited to spend time educating my community on SABA overuse and improving their disease state. I am also very excited to receive this grant to pay for the printing of educational materials and to offer delivery to our patients that have a hard time accessing the pharmacy to pick up their medications. Most of our patient population is very low income, so to be able to provide these services free of charge is truly fantastic.”
