“My passion for community pharmacy advancement and research sparked when I became involved in community practice research my third and fourth years of pharmacy school. Community pharmacists are capable of providing a wide range of services but do not always have access to patient information. Many health-system owned retail pharmacies have access to electronic health records (EHRs), but this is not a luxury that all community pharmacies have. There are limited examples of electronic health information exchange (HIE) in independent and supermarket chain pharmacies. However, to my knowledge, no literature exists on HIE implementation in chain community pharmacies, which is crucial for future scaling of community pharmacist HIE models. My project is one of many needed for widespread HIE implementation, but I am excited to see where the future of community pharmacy goes with this technological advancement.”
