Assessing Pennsylvania Community Pharmacists’ Understanding of Standard-of-Care Regulatory Models

Mary Louise Andersen.png

Traditionally, pharmacy regulation is defined with rules that limit pharmacist scope. The standard-of-care regulatory model has emerged, shifting oversight from rule adherence to outcome based, patient centered care. Under this model, pharmacists provide care meeting the standards of a “reasonable and prudent pharmacist.” This framework enables pharmacists to independently prescribe for certain conditions, Initiate treatments and offer expanded clinical services.

I am very grateful to be the recipient of the APhA Foundation Incentive Grant this year. This is an exciting opportunity because I believe that this project will serve as a meaningful step towards community pharmacy regulation change and advocacy for expanded pharmacist scope in Pennsylvania.
