Sam Kalman Scholarship
The APhA Foundation is honored to recognize Samuel H. Kalman through a named scholarship established by a lead gift from Elizabeth Keyes and supported by gifts from current and former APhA staff members. Â Kalman retired in December 1998 where he most recently worked in a dual position as Executive Director of APhA Development and APhA Foundation Senior Director of Administration, after 25 years of service to the association.
Kalman began his career at APhA as a result of a government grant to develop educational programs and other activities to assist pharmacists in providing services to nursing homes.Â
Subsequently, Kalman served as APhA Director of Education at which point he led in the development of the National Medication Awareness Test (NMAT) and was co-author of the Standards of Practice for the Profession of Pharmacy.
In 1984, Kalman became secretary of the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) and was involved in pharmacist certification activities, including developing the Taskforce on Specialties in Pharmacy and Collaborative Study on Competence Assessment. Â Spanning nearly a decade of work with BPS, he then served in the role of APhA Foundation Administrator, and was an essential leader in the establishment of Project ImPACT: Hyperlipidemia, the landmark collaborative practice model demonstrating how pharmacists can improve patient care. Â While his full-time tenure with the Association ended in 1998, he continues to contribute his time to both APhA and the Foundation through part-time consultancy.
Kalman’s sustained service to the pharmacy profession is applauded and a named scholarship recognizing his dedication is an appropriate way to honor and thank him for his professional accomplishments. The establishment of this scholarship honors a colleague and his 25 years of service and contributions to advance the work of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the APhA Foundation and the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties and their impact on pharmacy practice in the United States
