Sandra Leal, PharmD, MPH, CDCES, FAPhA

Academic Journey

Dr. Sandra Leal earned her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. She later completed a Master of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her postgraduate training includes a residency at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and a prestigious Fellowship in Primary Care Health Policy with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).


Career Journey

Dr. Sandra Leal, PharmD, MPH, FAPhA, is a nationally recognized leader in pharmacy, public health policy, and healthcare innovation. Her career reflects a deep commitment to expanding access to care, advancing pharmacist-led initiatives, and shaping health policy at both organizational and national levels. She currently serves as Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Relations at CVS Health, where she plays a pivotal role in advocacy, strategic partnerships, and professional engagement across the pharmacy enterprise. In this capacity, Dr. Leal has been instrumental in leading initiatives that elevate the role of pharmacists.


APhA Journey

Dr. Leal has been actively engaged with APhA since her student days, contributing to initiatives like Project Impact Diabetes. She has participated in special interest groups focused on diabetes management, care for the underserved, and public health. Her service on multiple APhA advisory groups reflects her dedication to advancing pharmacy practice. Her involvement culminated in her presidency, where she championed pharmacists and patients by raising awareness and shaping policy—particularly around equitable healthcare access and pharmacist provider status. She believes that continued engagement at a local, state, and national level is critical to continued professional growth and passion for the profession.


Personal Story

Sandra resides in Tucson, Arizona. She is married to a wonderful and supportive partner, and they share one amazing daughter who is studying engineering. She loves spending time with her family and enjoys traveling, exploring community events, volunteering her time on board service, and photography.


Mentor?

Dr. Leal credits many individuals for shaping her professional journey. While it’s difficult to name just one mentor, she acknowledges the profound influence of several leaders within APhA including Anne Burns and Ben Bluml as stand out role models whose guidance have inspired her continued commitment to advancing pharmacy practice.

Dr. Leal’s leadership roadmap is clear: engage early, stay active, and seek out opportunities. Join interest groups, volunteer, mentor and be mentored, advocate fiercely, build strong relationships, and stay true to your mission. Each step fuels a more purposeful and rewarding career.
