Grabenstein is a global vaccinologist, pharmacist, and public-health leader. He has written over 300 articles and 12 books. He operates Vaccine Dynamics, a consulting service. He edits the free weekly newsletter of Immunize.org and serves as president of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy and chair of the Pharmacy Leadership & Education Institute. Dr. Grabenstein was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2021. He is the 2020 Remington Honor Medalist. He received his pharmacy degree from Duquesne University, a master’s degree in education from Boston University, then a doctorate in pharmacoepidemiology at the University of North Carolina. As Global Executive Director of Medical Affairs for Merck Vaccines, he led scientific exchange involving > 180 million doses of 13 vaccines. His advocacy helped strengthen vaccination programs on six continents. As a U.S. Army Colonel, Dr. Grabenstein directed DoD vaccination programs for troops, retirees, and family members across four continents and dozens of ships at sea. He organized “Immunization University” to train clinicians across health disciplines across continents. In 1996, Dr. Grabenstein wrote the curriculum for "Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery," a CDC-recognized 20-hour course coordinated by APhA that has trained over 500,000 U.S. pharmacists.
