2023 Incentive Grant Recipient

2023 Incentive Grant Recipient: Shelby Reid, PharmD

Project Proposal: Evaluation of a community pharmacist-led behavioral health screening and intervention

Shelby Reid, PharmD currently serves as a University of Iowa College of Pharmacy PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Resident at Greenwood Pharmacy in Waterloo, Iowa.

Many adults experience mental illness each year which suggests that behavioral health is a significant public health problem. There are many barriers to receiving care for mental health, including cost, lack of providers, and the stigma associated with behavioral health. Community pharmacists are well positioned to screen patients for mental illness, make referrals, and identify and resolve medication-related problems.

"I am most excited to implement a patient care service that will enhance patients’ awareness of mental health as well as help patients that are at risk for depression and/or anxiety to find providers or medication treatment that works for them. My hope is that this practice will advance the role of the pharmacist by allowing increased access to mental health services and identify drug therapy problems which could contribute to side effects, treatment discontinuation or decreased response to therapy."

“I am honored to receive an APhA Foundation Incentive Grant this year. I am excited to have the opportunity to explore a topic that has limited accessibility and bring it to a setting that focuses on increased patient engagement and enhanced patient care.”
