2023 Incentive Grant Recipient

2023 Incentive Grant Recipient: Shanon Vartanian, PharmD

Project Proposal: The Role of the Community Pharmacist: The Perspective of the Community They Serve

Shanon Vartanian, PharmD currently serves as the PGY-1 Community – Based Pharmacy Resident at USC Pharmacies and Clinics/USC School of Pharmacy in Los Angeles, California.

Community pharmacists play an important role in closing the continuously growing gap in primary care. Recent changes in California law, including the ability to perform CLIA – waived point of care testing, has provided community pharmacists with the opportunity to expand patient care services. Whether a pharmacy offers travel consultations or tobacco cessation depends primarily on the needs of the population it serves.

"The information gathered through this project will serve as a framework for the implementation of services that could best benefit the patient demographic the community pharmacy serves. Pharmacists can expand the quality and quantity of community desired clinical services and demonstrate the critical role they serve in patient care. With the support of this grant this project will help further this goal. "

""The role of the community pharmacist in patient care is expanding and it’s time to pair our
unique knowledge with our accessibility to provide optimal care for our patients. I am honored to have received the incentive grant and I hope that the information gathered through my project will serve as a primary step in the implementation of new services in community pharmacies."
