Project Proposal: Pharmacy Student Self-Perceived Confidence and Readiness to Provide Diabetes Counseling and Education

Evan Young, PharmD, currently serves as the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Resident at Mathes Diabetes Center & Purdue University in New Albany, IN.

The number of patients suffering from chronic disease is growing at an alarming rate. When it comes to diabetes management specifically, pharmacists are uniquely positioned and qualified to provide pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic education to patients. As the need for pharmacists to provide these types of education expands it is vital to ensure that pharmacy students are confident in their knowledge and abilities, and therefore more likely to participate in the provision of exceptional patient care when they enter practice.

I am incredibly grateful to have been chosen for the Incentive Grant this year! This funding will help us conduct research that will assist our educators in ensuring that students are prepared to be confident and capable practitioners who are able to meet the growing needs of our patients. This study touches each of my primary interests in pharmacy -diabetes management, academic development, and ambulatory/community practice- and I am so excited to be able to lead a project that ties them all together.
