Project Proposal: Evaluation of barriers and facilitators to providing point-of-care HIV screening in the community pharmacy setting

Madison McDonald, PharmD, currently serves as the PGY1 Community Pharmacy Resident at Greenwood Pharmacy in Waterloo, Iowa.

In 2016, 20% of HIV diagnoses in the state of Iowa were identified as a late-diagnoses and community pharmacies are in a unique position to increase patient access to screening services and education. Community pharmacists are often the first, or most accessible, health care provider for patients, and the ability to offer clinical services such as point-of-care HIV screening provides the opportunity to reach patients more readily. Through the identification of both barriers and the abilities to overcome those barriers, not only could these participating community pharmacies be better equipped to continue to offer point-of-care HIV screenings, but the information gathered could also be applied to other clinical screening services and shared with other pharmacies.

I am honored to receive this grant and to have the opportunity to work with the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the participating pharmacies to continue to find ways that we can advance clinical services offered in community pharmacies. I am excited to complete my project because increasing patients’ access to healthcare, especially in rural or underserved communities, has always been a passion of mine and expansion of innovative clinical services in community pharmacies would directly contribute to that.
