WASHINGTON, DC – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation today announced the recipients of the 2021 Pinnacle Awards. Established in 1998, the annual Pinnacle Awards celebrate significant contributions to the medication use process: increasing patient adherence, reducing adverse drug events, promoting the use of national treatment guidelines, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing communication among the members of the healthcare team.
“The APhA Foundation congratulates the 2021 Pinnacle Award honorees. The Award highlights their innovative pharmacist-led activities and efforts to optimize medication use and the engagement of pharmacists and the pharmacy team to create heathier communities,” said APhA Foundation Executive Director, Mitchel C. Rothholz, RPh, MBA.
The 2021 Pinnacle Award Recipients
Category I: Individual Award for Career Achievement: This category recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in enhancing healthcare quality and medication use.
Recipient: Jeanine Abrons, PharmD, MS, FAPhA
Chosen for her global leadership in medication management for underserved populations.
Category II: Group Practices, Health Systems, and Healthcare Corporations: This category recognizes a significant scientific contribution and/or quality improvement project.
Recipient: University of Michigan Health Ann Arbor, MI
Selected for the success of their hypertension program and its direct effect on patient health and outcomes.
Category III: Voluntary Health Agencies, Nonprofit Organizations, Associations, Government Agencies and Public/Private Partnerships: This category recognizes organizations that have demonstrated approaches to assist patients and their caregivers in achieving better outcomes from their medications.
Recipient: University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy (in partnership with Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association, Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network, and Value Drug)
Selected for their longitudinal work which has addressed medication therapy problems, promoted cost savings, and created revenue streams.

The Innovations in Pharmacy Practice Lecture, which is part of the Pinnacle Awards Program, will be delivered by Melissa Somma McGivney, PharmD, FCCP, FAPhA, Professor and Associate Dean for Community Partnerships, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and coordinator of the School of Pharmacy’s work in partnership with the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association, Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network, and Value Drug. McGivney will discuss some of the significant outcomes that have developed from this collaboration.
