Project Proposal: Impact of more lenient A1C goals on hypoglycemic episodes in type 2 diabetic food insecure patients

Maya Edmond, PharmD, currently serves as the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Resident at Inova Health System in Fairfax, VA.

The motivation behind this project was the opportunity to explore better practice options for diabetic patients with food insecurities. Currently, there are few recommendations for how to treat this population of patients. My hope is with this project, we will have more insight on how to treat food insecure patients to insure they receive optimal care.

I am most excited about the opportunity to provide new diabetes supplies to patients who may not be able to afford these supplies on their own. Better access to glucometers, lancets, and test strips allows the patient to have a better understanding and control of their disease. I am happy this research project has the chance to improve patient outcomes by decreasing the incidence of hypoglycemia.
