2015 Marvin and Joanell Dyrstad Scholarship Recipient

Meena Murugappan

University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy - Duluth Campus

Meena Murugappan is a third year student pharmacist at the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy. She was born in India, raised in Zambia and went to college at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Having started pharmacy school at the age of 18, she will be one of the youngest graduating pharmacists in May 2016 at the age of 22. Despite being younger than the norm, she has been well-involved in several professional organizations. She served as the 2013-2014 Regional Delegate for the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists and is the current Policy Vice President for the Minnesota Pharmacy Student Alliance. The most influential experience for Meena during her time in pharmacy school has been at HOPE Clinic; a student-run free interprofessional clinic. She has served as the HOPE Clinic Coordinator for two years and has learnt and grown as a leader through this experience. It was through her leadership role with HOPE Clinic that she discovered her passion to work with medically underserved populations as well as her passion for health-system leadership and administration.  Her experience as an administrative intern at Johns Hopkins Hospital this past summer solidified her desire to pursue a future career in the administrative path.

She has an interest in international and public health and is committed to advancing pharmacy practice globally. Outside of Pharmacy, she enjoys dancing to Indian classical music and travelling.
