Mind the Statin Gap—Evaluating Barriers in Pharmacy-Recommended Statin Therapy
Tiffany Huynh is a PGY1 pharmacy resident with Albertsons Companies / UC Irvine in Fullerton, CA.
“Cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects low-socioeconomic and minority populations due to social factors such as income, limited access to care, lower health literacy, and higher prevalence of risk factors. Despite strong evidence supporting the use of statin in the diabetic population, there is a significant gap that exists in its implementation, resulting in suboptimal clinical outcomes. It is of utmost importance for us as pharmacists to utilize our expertise and our accessibility to the community to close this gap and optimize statin therapy implementation.
The motivation behind this project stemmed from the misconceptions and resistance of statin therapy from physicians and patients despite well-documented evidence of its role in cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned throughout the community to be able to bridge gaps and initiate a collaborative approach to care. It is imperative to create a healthcare landscape that fosters collaboration within the healthcare team and a safe environment for patients to learn about their health.
I am deeply honored to be one of the recipients of the APhA Incentive Grants and through this project, I am excited to take part in redefining our healthcare landscape that fosters collaboration to ensure holistic and coordinated patient care. The role of a pharmacist is essential within a healthcare team and our potential is limitless. I am hopeful that this project will further ignite that conversation and reshape the capabilities and what it means to be a pharmacist.”
