Project Proposal: The role of social determinants of health in adherence of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in the community pharmacy setting

Dominique Devereux, PharmD, currently serves as the PGY1 Community Pharmacy Resident at Balls Food in Kansas City, Missouri.

While numerically defining non-adherence is relatively straightforward, the reasoning for the patients’ behaviors is multi-factorial and individualized; social determinants of health can provide insight into the reasoning behind this and how pharmacist in the community can assist.

My motivation behind my project is to help the included pharmacies learn more about the social determinants of health that play a part of their patient’s adherence to statin medications. My hope is there will be a strong correlation between identified factors and barriers to adherence will provide opportunities for pharmacies to add new services.

Working in such a demographically diverse area, I am most excited to learn about opportunities to address my patient’s social needs. My hope is that the concluding data can be used to support future business plans for the pharmacy to add in useful services to the patients to increase medication adherence.
