Project Proposal: Evaluation of palatability of crushed over-the-counter medication

Julia Dickman, PharmD currently serves as the PGY-2 Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacy Resident at The Ohio State College of Pharmacy and Optum Hospice Pharmacy Services in Westerville, Ohio. She graduated from the Ohio Northern University in 2018.

As many older adults report difficulty swallowing medications, Dr. Dickman hopes to assess the palatability of commonly used crushed over-the-counter medications. Her goal is to increase pharmacists’ understanding about the palatability of crushed medications and aid in pharmacists’ communication with patients and caregivers regarding the impact on quality of life.

Crushing medications for elderly patients is described in the literature. Crushing medications has been examined from both a safety perspective and a dosing perspective, however there is limited literature on palatability of crushed medications in adults.

"I am honored to receive this grant and have the opportunity to work with other pharmacists who are also passionate about older adults and increasing the quality of recommendations we are able to provide!"
