Project Proposal: An Electronic Tool to Aid Community Pharmacists in Optimizing Care for Persons with Diabetes
Sha-Phawn Williams is excited her project “will help pharmacists increase their role as an integral part of the community health care team” and “will also change how patients view their pharmacist, from providing a product to providing a service focused on their health.”
Dr. Williams is a PGY1 community pharmacy resident at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Realo Discount Drugs in Jacksonville, NC. The subject of her proposal, diabetes, affects 9.4% of the US population and in 2012 was estimated to cost the US $245 billion. Complications of this disease include cardiovascular disease and damage to the nerves, kidneys, eyes, feet, and other organs. Dr. Williams’ personal experience taking care of her late father, who passed due to diabetes-related complications, fueled her passion for preventing adverse patient health outcomes in all patients, especially those with diabetes.
Sha-Phawn Williams is encouraged that other pharmacists are “invested in improving patient care for persons with diabetes”.
